So, am I the right therapist for you?

That's the key question right? Am I the person who can help you right now?
Whenever people ask me how to choose a therapist, here's what I tell them. Find someone who's a good match. Someone who "gets it". Trust your instinct about this. You'll know if the person gets you or not.
Most of the people I talk to think I get it. Really get it. At the end of the day, that will be it. Whether you feel I get you and understand what's going on in your life.
But I also want you to know who I am and what kind of experience I'm bringing to the table. Because, honestly, that matters too. So here's a bit about me. I'd love to talk with you about any questions you have about me or how we can work together. Don't talk yourself out of checking thing out, call me!
I Love What I Do.
I think one of the most important things for you to know about me is that I love working with my clients. I love being a therapist and I feel lucky every day that my job is my passion. I'm very proud that the majority of my new clients come from word of mouth referrals.
My clients most often describe me as warm and non-judgmental.
I highlighted this and made it bigger because I love this. It's who I want to be in the world. By the way, I can also be funny, and if you are too, or just like funny, it's a good bet there will be some laughter in our sessions.
If you are ready for a therapist who will go deeper than just, "How do you feel about that?", I've got your back.
I offer a very unique approach that uses both concrete skills, like how to stop being an anxious mess (I've got some incredibly effective tricks for that), to going very deep into what's underneath the waters that are stirring around you. Many of my clients tell me, "I've never seen a therapist like you. You have a way of getting to the heart of things that no one else ever has." I love this work.
I also believe in a positive approach to helping you move forward with your life. We'll look at the things that are troubling you, but also your strengths. I'm going to help you look at things in a new way. We'll talk about those things that have contributed to your current struggles and any patterns you've developed for coping with difficulties that are no longer helpful to you or are hurting you. I'll challenge you to let go of the things you've been doing that are making your life harder. We'll figure out new, healthier ways for you to take on life.
My Experience.
I've been around for a long time. I've worked in the mental health field since 1986. Since those early days I've worked in a variety of settings, giving me a broad experience working with people in emotional pain. After working in Community Mental Health and a psychiatric hospital, I decided I wanted to be a therapist. I graduated with my Masters degree in Social Work from California State University, Sacramento. I began working as a therapist in 1997. I have never looked back.
For ten years I worked at a wonderful agency in California called the Early Childhood Counseling Center. We specialized in work with children and their parents/caregivers. In addition to working as a therapist at that agency, I served as both the Clinical Director and the Executive Director. I had the opportunity to train other therapists and was able to supervise graduate students in their development as therapists.
I am trained in EMDR, a treatment that is especially helpful with trauma.
It is very effective at reducing or eliminating distressing symptoms after a trauma such as anxiety, nightmares, and flashbacks. If you "just can't stop thinking about it" EMDR may be very helpful to you.
I have been in private practice since 2006. I currently offer telehealth sessions to clients in Texas, Michigan, California, Florida, Massachusetts and Vermont. I have experience working with all sorts of clients with a wide variety of issues including:
